DAN Oxygen & Diving First Aid Courses
Every diver should be able to provide emergency oxygen to an injured diver. Early provision of oxygen to an injured diver has been shown to be an important factor in the diver's recovery from a diving related injury. DAN Asia Pacific offers a number of courses designed to familiarise divers with providing appropriate first aid to an injured diver.
The DAN Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Course, with a nominal duration of 4 hours, is designed to provide
participants with training in techniques for basic life support,
including the management of an unresponsive victim and CPR. The DAN CPR Course is Nationally Recognised Training in Australia, and participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTCPR201A: Perform CPR.
The DAN Oxygen Provision in Dive Accidents course is focused on providing oxygen first aid for diving injuries, as well as for other situations where the provision of emergency oxygen may be beneficial. This four hour program provides invaluable knowledge and skills to assist an injured diver. The DAN Oxygen Provider Course is Nationally Recognised Training in Australia, and successful participants receive a Statement of Attainment for the course 21454VIC: Oxygen Provision in Dive Accidents. Current certification in CPR is a prerequisite to this program.
The DAN First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries
course deals with the recognition, first aid, and prevention of
injuries or illness from a variety of potentially hazardous marine
life. Topics covered include jellyfish, fish with venomous spines,
blue-ringed octopus, sea snakes, fish poisonings and many more. The
theory and video presentations are supported by practical exercises in
bandaging, bleeding control, pressure-immobilisation technique and
revision of CPR.
The DAN AED Course teaches people to utilised an Automated External Defibrillator in the event of a cardiac emergency. Heart attacks are a very common cause of death throughout society, and cardiac conditions are associated with a high proportion of diving deaths each year. The early use of an AED has be shown as a vital link in the chain of survivial, and gaining experience with operating these devices is a vital step in the event of an emergency. Successful completion of this course will result in a Statement of Attainment for the Nationally Recognised Training unit PUAOPE010A: Operate a Semi Automatic Defibrillator in an Emergency. Current certification in CPR is a prerequisite to this program.
The DAN Onsite Neurological Assessment course is a great program to introduce divers to the process of conducting a neurological assessment on a potentially injured diver. Divers with DCI quite often have some damage to
their nervous system. This program enables the
participant to obtain essential information about a diver who has a
possible diving injury, and teaches the participant what
information should be relayed to emergency services when they arrive. It is a useful course for situations where an individual might be in denial about their condition, or where medical assistance is not immediately available, and the first aider may be required to liaise with a diving emergency or medical hotline. Current certiication as a DAN Oxygen Provider is a prerequisite to this program.
The DAN Advanced Oxygen First Aid Course introduces the oxygen provider to more advanced techniques that may be used in a diving or other emergency. These skills include the process of finding a carotid pulse, as well as the use of oxygen resuscitation equipment as the EMT-R manually tirggered resuscitation valve, and the bag valve mask (BVM). Current certiication as a DAN Oxygen Provider is a prerequisite to this program.
We strongly recommend that all diving professionals (divemasters, instructors, etc) and technical divers should maintain a current qualification in Oxygen first aid, along with their CPR and general first aid training. For that matter, we simply recommend every diver should get and maintain training in oxygen first aid.
Please contact us for more information about these programs, which may be scheduled on demand, and are regularly scheduled at a variety of locations in Wollongong, Sydney and Canberra.
