Caverns Measureless to Man by Sheck Exley

This book is essentially a diary of some of the author’s diving experiences, from his introduction to the pursuit as a boy, through to 1989 – five years before his death during a dive in Mexico.

Caverns Measureless to Man

Although I’ve chosen to use the word ‘diary’, the book is far from a dry, passionless account of the author’s experiences. In fact the reader is taken through the gamut of problem free descents and extraordinary depths; to Exley’s own near fatal experiences; and the near fatal incidents, and ultimately deaths of diving partners.

Both colour and black and white photographs, and simple diagrams of some of the dive sites are scattered throughout.

Interestingly, the author did not touch on any aspect of his adult life that did not relate to diving, with the reader only ever exposed to Exley the diver-explorer.

Considering the sheer number of the author’s achievements, and the contribution he made to the development of cave and very deep diving; the narration is surprisingly devoid of self promotion.

The book provides an interesting account of some of the author’s amazing exploits. It is also, sadly, a roll call of divers who have lost their lives in the pursuit of extreme diving.

I’d really only recommend this book for those who have a particular interest in Sheck Exley himself, or a committed interest in the history of cave diving.
