Diving Jervis Bay: Crocodile Head
Crocodile Head is situated north of Point Perpendicular, south of Smugglers Cave, accessible only by boat, and only in reasonable conditions. This site has a rich variety of diving, with the starting point often being on the “5 Way Swimthrough”, which lies in about 19m. This is a large boulder with a chamber underneath, with multiple (5) entry points. Very safe, and lots of stuff to see inside. Then swim west into the wall, and then south along it. Theres lots of growth, so spend a lot of time. Depth ranges from 9m down to 15m or so, so you can take it slow. A little way along you will come to a small cave in about 14m. Look around inside it, theres always a family of Bleekers devilfish, and they are pretty showy. Last dive I spent about 10 minutes just watching one prance around.
Continue south, turning right (west) following the wall around, reaching a very large cave. Its been described as being big enough to park a double decker bus in. Last two times I’ve dived here, theres been some devilfish in this cave too. The cave is truly huge, starting at about 15m and working up to 4m, penetrating about 15m or so. Take your time and work right through it, although watch the surge, as the ears can really pop when it thunders above. Outside the cave is a natural ampitheatre type structure, also fun to poke around in. Again, a dive with an enormous amount to offer, including the usual fantastic JB vis, fishlife and growth.
