Technical Diving Courses

Technical diving is a step beyond recreational diving.  An equipment intensive and potentially risky pursuit, tec diving allows you to explore beyond the standard limits of recreational diving.

Tec Diving can be said to be any type of diving that takes the diver beyond the standard recreational diving limits, defined by depth (up to 40m), decompression (staying with the No Decompression Limits or NDLs) and overhead environments (more than 40 linear metres from the surface).

As such, Tec Diving comprises a range of environments and situations, and requires a progressive approach to gaining skills and experience with the knowledge, procedures and equipment required to undertake Tec Diving.

At this time, we offer the following tec diving programs

Technical Diving Essentials (Tech Essentials)

Our Tech Essentials Program combines the TDI Advanced Nitrox course and TDI Decompression Procedures courses into a program that gives the diver interested in technical diving techniques and procedures a thorough introduction to this niche specialty of diving, and prepares them to dive to a maximum depth of 45m using air, nitrox and oxygen as appropriate for bottom gas and decompression.

TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver

In the TDI Advanced Nitrox course, the knowledge and skills you develop in your PADI Enriched Air Diver, TDI Nitrox Diver or equivalent course are expanded to cover all ranges of oxygen concentration in the breathing mixture, from Air (EANx21) up to pure Oxygen.  Whilst most recreational divers will never need more than the EANx40 covered in your primary Enriched Air Nitrox course, there are at least 2 reasons why some divers want the ability to utilise concentrations greater than EANx40

  1. For use in extended no-stop dives in moderate depth ranges
  2. To enhance off-gassing during a safety or decompression stop, or to accelerate or enhance off-gassing during decompression stops.
As a standalone course, the TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver course consists of at least 4 dives.

TDI Decompression Procedures Diver

The Decompression Procedures course introduces you to the theory and techniques of performing decompression dives to a maximum depth of 45msw.

The program incorporates workshops involving equipment requirements and rigging, and decompression dive planning.  You will learn about gas management, and selection of gases for bottom mix and decompression, and there will be a thorough discussion of contingency planning.  The TDI Decompression Procedures courses has at least 4 dives.

Combined in our Tech Essentials Program, these 2 courses include a minimum of 6 dives, with 2 of them being decompression dives conducted at a depth range between 30msw and 45msw.  You will receive a thorough overview of the theory, techniques and equipment you need to safely conduct dives in this range, with limited decompression that may include the use of EANx or Oxygen for greater effectiveness of your decompression.

Pre-Requisites

  1. Be 18 years of age or older
  2. Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent
  3. Have a minimum certification of TDI Nitrox Diver, PADI Enriched Air Diver or equivalent
  4. Show proof of fifty (50) logged open water dives

For participants who I have not personally trained or dive with, I like to schedule a session where we discuss background, diving experience, motivations and goals. This will give both of us the opportunity to assess that undertaking technical training with me will be appropriate for the individual.  I like to also go for a dive with the individual prior to accepting them onto the course, so I can gain an understanding of their current level of skills.

TDI Nitrox Gas Blender

This courses teaches the student to competently and safely blend enriched air nitrox gas mixtures for recreational scuba.  The course provides an overview of the techniques, equipment and hazards involved in blending of enriched air nitrox.

DSAT Gas BlenderDSAT TecRec

This course provides a detailed overview of how to fill enriched air mixes for use by recreational enriched air divers, as well as tec divers.
